Selling Unlocked iPhones in Chinatown
Ever since the iPhone came out this time last year, hackers have been playing a cat and mouse game with Apple and AT&T to unlock the iPhones so the phones can be used on another network other than AT&T. An unlocked iPhone allows the owner to install 3rd party applications for the phone. However, unlocking will void the warranty.
So what does this have to do with Chinatown? Unlocked iPhones have become a niche market in some Chinatown stores. Wall Street analysts for both Apple and AT&T estimate that about roughly 20% of all sold iPhones end up being unlocked. We can assume that some of these end up in a shop like this on Tyler Street:

(FYI: The Chinatown Blogger owns a non-hacked iPhone running on AT&T’s network. All the photos posted on this site were taken with the iPhone’s built in camera.)
