August 21, 2008 by Chinatown Blogger.

About 2 months ago, this blog was contacted by a person who was interested in having a community group use an available space on Hudson Street. Upon further inquiry, he explained that the lease for the space fell through and until a new tenant could be found, the space could be utilized by a community group in the meantime. The Chinatown Blogger forwarded this email to others who followed up with the owner. The result?
The Hudson Street Gallery at 18 Hudson Street.
Their website states: “Hudson Street Gallery is an urban art space in Chinatown, devoted to historical and contemporary art about the past, present and future neighborhoods and peoples of Chinatown. Our mission is to honor the history and heritage of Chinatown and its immigrant communities while providing a home for contemporary artists to explore issues of geography, ethnicity and urbanism. We seek to bring new visitors to Chinatown from around Boston, and to bring more contemporary and historic art and artists to Chinatown.”
The gallery is a creative idea to re-activate a space that otherwise would have been left vacant and empty. By donating the space for community use until a new tenant is found, the owner gets more exposure while also contributing to the vibrancy of the neighborhood.
In the back of the gallery are is a collection of old Hudson Street and the process to reclaim the land back for the community through the development of AsianCDC’s Parcel 24 project. The gallery is opening on September 6th.
